10 Things to be Thankful For

My friend at Mediocre Mama wrote a post today about being thankful for all the little every day things, and it inspired me to take a look at my day today and give thanks.  As I’ve said before, I am thankful for my wonderful friends and family, but I wanted to take some time today to be thankful for the little things in life.

So in the spirit of Thanksgiving, and in no particular order, this is what I’m thankful for today:

  1. The block button on Twitter.
  2. When Jayden tried to “kiss” my nose this morning, he did not, in fact, bite it off as I had originally feared.
  3. My hands-free thingy, because without it I wouldn’t hear a damn thing anyone said to me on the phone. Ever.
  4. Gluten-free spaghetti noodles.
  5. The artwork Jayden shared on my boss’ wall was not permanent.
  6. Hot cocoa
  7. I will not be cooking Thanksgiving dinner.
  8. I get to eat amazing things on Thanksgiving.  (Can I start now?  I’m hungry.)
  9. It did not snow today.
  10. The random people who are voting for me to get the Sam-e gig.

What are you thankful for?

(ETA: One last thing I’m thankful for today… that the shock I received from trying to get my phone charger out of the outlet today did not do permanent damage, only hurt like crazy.  And left a burn.  Never a dull day in the life of me!)

Better Luck Next Time

Alright, it’s official… I totally fail this month’s blogging challenge.

I think we need to file this under not adding things to your plate if you’re already full (nice holiday reference there).  I knew this  month was going to be insane for me as far as work (and life in general) went, and I knew that it was going to be incredibly difficult for me to post every day.  I finally had to allow myself to fail the blogging challenge in order to avoid putting up ridiculously bad posts.

That said… I think another lesson is not to give up.  I have missed a few days (okay, entire weeks.  Don’t judge), but that doesn’t mean that I can’t put every effort into finishing out the month strong.  And there’s always next month, right?

My blog, like my entire life, is undergoing some changes right now.  I’m rethinking the direction I want it to go.  I’m playing with different ideas, tweaking design, identifying my goals.  If you have suggestions or would like to let me know what things you like (and what you didn’t), I welcome all feedback!

In the meantime:  take today’s lesson to heart.  Be realistic in the things you can handle, and be gentle with yourself if you need a do-over sometimes.

My Dysfunctional Giveaway

I don’t know about the rest of you, but things around here have been a bit stressful lately.  It’s the flu season (which, let me tell you, has been the gift that keeps on giving), I’ve been working around the clock on application videos and job hunts, and the holidays are just around the corner.  And nothing says stress like the holidays, am I right?

Well, I’ve decided it’s time to lighten things up a bit, and the folks at KnockKnock are going to help me out.  They have all kinds of fun stuff, like The Complete Manual of Things that Might Kill You and the Eat Me sticky notes (which I’m thinking are going to be a stocking stuffer for a very Special Someone).  One lucky reader–and me! :)–will receive the My Dysfunctions Guided Journal It’s the perfect place to jot down your daily insanities, just in time for the holidays.  (In fact, I’m thinking several of my dysfunctional friends may be getting this book for Christmas.)  Scattered throughout the book are quotes to really get your neurotic juices flowing.

So how do you win?

Pretty simple–just leave a comment on this post between now and 6pm Mountain Time on November 29th sharing your own psychological realism or nugget of neurosis (or just say hi!).  Make sure to include a working email address so I can contact you if you win (your email address will not be visable to any one but me, and I will only use it for contacting the winner of this contest).

Want extra entries?

After you’ve left me a comment, here are some ways to gain extra chances at winning:

  • Go to the KnockKnock website and find something you’d like, either as a gift or for yourself.  Then come back to this post and tell us what it is.
  • Tweet this post.  (Be sure to include @babywrapped so I don’t miss it!)
  • Subscribe to my blog and leave a comment letting me know.

Don’t forget to  vote for me to get the blogging gig! Thank you!

Winner will be chosen at random at 6pm MST on Sunday, November 29th.  Comments that are rude or inflammatory will not be posted on this blog or entered into contest. Big thanks to KnockKnock for sponsoring this giveaway!

Chances, Dreams, and Final Rounds

The second round of the Sam-e Good Mood Blogger contest is here.  As in, final round.  As in, holy crap, I might actually have a shot at this thing.  As in, have you voted yet?

If I get the job, I will write five posts a week on maintaining a good mood and staying positive.  Something I can completely handle, because I rock, and haven’t you heard?  I am a ball of sunshine.  In exchange, I will get a brand new laptop to keep (which is awesome, because I have none) and $5,000 a month for the next six months.  Pretty amazing, right?

I’m still kind of in shock that I have made it this far.  I mean, here I am, small town girl, struggling single mama, brand new blogger (publicly, anyway), and somehow I made it into the top twenty.  Somehow, I got 5,551 votes!  (That somehow is all of you, and your hard work.)  I am competing with folks who have been blogging for years and have a large social media network.  In the beginning, I thought there was no way I would be able to compete with that.  I was wrong.  Because of the amazing support of family, friends, fellow bloggers, and complete strangers, I am in the running for a job that could change my life completely.

Have I said thank you yet?  Let me say it again.  THANK YOU.  There aren’t words enough to do justice for how grateful I am.  Thank you thank you thank you.

This is how this round works:  all of us submitted a 250 word blurb and a video on why we thought we should be the good mood blogger.  The profiles are open to public voting from now until December 7th. You can vote once per day per computer from now until then.  We will also be scored by a panel of three judges.  The number of public votes counts for 20% of our final score, and the judges score counts for the other 80%.  So essentially, the person with the highest number of votes doesn’t automatically get the job, but every vote helps bring me closer to my goal.

So please, hang with me for another few weeks.  I need to go all out if I’m going to have a chance at this.  If you have facebook, twitter, myspace, email, carrier pigeons, billboard signs, access to radio announcers, whatever–please help me by spreading the word to vote for me to get the job!  Feel free to grab the badge (the code is listed on the voting site).  You can even share my application video! (Tomorrow is Bribe Your Coworker to Vote Day.  It’s very popular.)

You can see how I’m doing here (which can quickly become an addiction, believe me).

Be sure to check back here over the next couple of days.  I’m working on a fun contest to go along with this, and YOU could be the winner!

Wordless Wednesday: Grazing

Here’s a summer story I wanted to share with you.

It’s about a boy, discovering the Great Outdoors

And finding it to be quite tasty

Isn’t it funny that all attempts to tempt the boy with food, such as bananas or cheese, are promptly rejected, but rocks and dirt?  No problem.  Grass?  What a delicious snack.

The Day Half-Done

workinbabyDo you ever have one of those days where you are moving, but you never get anywhere?

You keep working harder, but nothing gets done?

Today was that day for me. I have several half-started posts, laundry in the wash, and at least three major projects for work barely begun. I went to work in mismatched socks. J didn’t have on any socks at all.

It’s not the end of the world. Perhaps tomorrow will be more productive. Perhaps tomorrow J will not wake up crying at 4 am. There are more important things than checking things off lists.

So I am drifting off to sleep while writing this, giving myself permission to call it a day and try again tomorrow.
